Well, my most current project, Tragic Comic, has already crashed and burned due to personal as well as musical differences. Unfortunately they were mostly personal. I was playing drums with a dear friend of mine who is a super talented guitarist. All originals. My songs, his songs, new songs, with the intent to record and bring in another multi-instrumentalist in to round it out. 5 months of some good music, but there was just more bullshit than I could be a part of. I will leave it at that. So…back to practicing solo. Working with other musicians is a pain in the fucking ass to me right now. I have my own crazy ass to wake up with and deal with throughout the day. Ha! Soon I will figure out where I will do some open mic onstage rehearsal action that might lead to some gig action. Too bad about Tragic Comic. It could have been pretty awesome.

Well, my last gig was November 27th. with an old band of mine called Spyder 130. My role in that band was 2nd guitarist, backing vocals, and lead on one of my songs. (Invisible). Not the greatest gig I ever did, but it was a reunion for a show honoring the memory of a friend and former band mate Jason Cowles who passed away last year. ( he was our bass player 15 years ago) The gig was held at The Bancroft in Spring Valley. 9143 Campo Road. A super cool, earthy, rock and roll bar that pours strong drinks and has everything you would want from a music venue. Mostly…cool owner, staff, and crowd alike. Anyway, I have some rehearsing to do, and a few open mics to play to get me back into solo gig shape for 2016. I am also looking to form a raucous obnoxious punk/garage/alt band next year. Hit me up if interested. No tweekers, junkies, or cult members need apply. Any updates on gigs etc. will be posted here, as well as on my FB page. Also check print media like CityBeat and The Reader. Rock on with your badass self…and Happy Holidaze.
A.K. Skurgis Bio/ SD Reader Article
by Jay Allen Sanford
( All my shows are performed acoustically. Just me and my guitar. I always choose my material according to the venue I am performing in )
“The simplest way to describe my music is acoustic rock,” says A.K. Skurgis, who spent five years playing bass and singing for hard-rockers Acid Burn before returning to a career as an introspective acoustic solo performer in the vein of Tom Waits and the late Elliott Smith. “I play a mix of straight-up rock tunes, songs of emotional turmoil, and songs about things that should never be brought up at the dinner table. That’s my live show. My studio stuff is about the same; all originals but more fully instrumented.” Based in Rolando near SDSU, Skurgis is a long time veteran San Diego musician, lyricist, poet, and songwriter. He has been performing his original songs (acoustically) and poetry in Southern California since 1990. His diverse selection of material has given him the opportunity to play in nightclubs, coffee houses, street fairs, parking lots, keg parties, divorce parties, etc. Mixing dark moods, adult themes, light hearted fun, and satirical humor into his shows, Skurgis opened for and shared bills with Stone Temple Pilots, the Alarm, U.K. Subs, Wayne Kramer, the Mentors, Texas Terri & the Stiff Ones, Jewel, and others, before earning top billing. Skurgis makes an important distinction between his debut full-length, Skurgisms, and his performances. “Live, I play acoustically, just me and my guitar. On my CD, out of 21 tracks, only a handful are acoustic. I’m playing acoustic and electric guitar, plus bass, drums, and keyboards…some of my songs exist in two very different versions — one-man acoustic and full-band electric.” Aside from doing occasional spoken-word recitals, Skurgis keeps busy with making music.

First time playing solo after a 5-6 year break. Recorded at a talent night at The Hair Zone in Poway California. April 17th 2010. A tad rusty and sloppy but spirited. Performing “Should Have Listened” & “Constipation”. Please forgive the quality of the recording…it was recorded spur of the moment on a cell phone.
Thank you Layla Collins for recording this.
